Finish That Basement

The other day I was watching a popular television program on DIY network where the host and a team of his handy men infiltrate a nominated couples home to design and build a dream room. In this particular episode they created a home theater room for the couple. But as I sat on my comfortable couch watching, my mind began to wander, designing my very own dream room. And of course, being not only a poker enthusiast but a casino enthusiast in general, I designed the ultimate home casino.

With the market being flooded with poker products, blackjack supplies, craps supplies, and casino related products, it has become easier than ever to make that dream of turning your un-finished basement into a gambling paradise a reality. Here are just a few of my ideas to help you get headed in the right direction. (After the sheet-rock has been hung, of course)

The first thing you really need to consider is how many people you will have in your “casino” to play with you. Remember that every evening you won’t be able to host a casino party, unless you are building this in a Fraternity house, so if you go out and buy games and gaming tables that require multiple players, and it is only you and your wife at home to play, the appeal and fun of the home casino will wear off very quickly. You just won’t be able to enjoy it to its fullest potential. So my first recommendation is to have a variety of games in your game room. Slot machines and video poker games are always a great option if you think there will only be a few people at any given time playing.

After you have decided on some of those single or double player games, it will be time to decide on what multi-player games you want to incorporate into your room. My best recommendation would be to pick some of the games that are highly social, it just makes for a better overall experience. My favorites for this would be Texas Hold’em, Craps, and Roulette. These three games are very social and allow you to interact with each player. These are the games that everyone will flock to when the crowd grows and eveyone is enjoying themselves. These games are very easy to set up now that the availablity of gaming tables and custom gaming supplies is increasing.

Next up, after you have your games picked and tables set up, will be to accessorize. A lot of people forget about the little things and then tend to skimp on them. Poker chips are a necessity and can be found in a wide variety, so try out several different kinds to decide which you like best. Also are playing cards, my recommendation would be to buy plastic cards like the ones KEM and Copag manufacture. These cards last much longer than traditional paper cards, so in the long run they will save you money. The list of accessories can be long, so the best thing you can do is browse the different accessories and supplies to decide what you really want and need.

These are just a few of the ideas I have for a home casino. I could go on and on until my fingers are blue. The options available to you are just about endless. So whats stopping you, FINISH THAT BASEMENT!
